Particular attention is given to the meaning of concentration (Samadhi), engrossment (samapatti) and the extra-ordinary cognitive capacities (vibhutis, siddhis) and the role that these notions play in the Yoga philosophy, which are relevant for issues currently under discussion in contemporary western philosophy of mind. The volume compares and contrasts classical yoga philosophy with classical Samkhya and with Indian Buddhist thought. Although the primary focus of the volume is on Patanjala Yoga, the system of Hatha Yoga and other satellite systems of Yoga are discussed as well, and an attempt is made to differentiate clearly the classical system of Yoga Sastra from Hatha Yoga and the other satellite systems. Some twenty-eight Sanskrit texts of Patanjala. Yoga are summarized or noted in the volume. Twenty-six volumes of Hatha Yoga and the texts of some other satellite systems are also included. Altogether the volume contains summaries and or notations for some seventy-five Sanskrit texts.

Another fine entry in the Savas Beatie series. Here, the focus is the brutal Battle of the Wilderness. This was a bloody battle, with both Confederate and Union forces losing many men. More casualties were on the Union side, but the arithmetic was such that more northern troops could die and be wondered and captured and still damage the fortunes of the Army of Northern Virginia. The latter, simply, had fewer troops to spare.The Wilderness marked the first of many battles featuring Ulysses Grant squaring off against Robert E. Lee (with General George Meade caught in an uncomfortable position as commanding general of the Army of the Potomac, with Grant right up there on the battlefield--often giving key orders). Union forces wanted to move forward quickly, to clear the Wilderness--a large piece of land featuring second growth trees, making it a difficult place for a battle. The conflict itself was confusing and deadly. Fires began in the foliage, killing many wounded troops who could not escape.The book focuses on two issues, as per the structure of the series: (a) a relatively brief discussion of the battle; (b) how to go to the battlefield and see major parts of the landscape to envision better the battle itself. Both are done well.Thne battle was a mess. Both sides would make successful thrusts and then suffer setbacks. One critical moment was when James Longstreet's First Corps was able to outflank Winfield Scott Hancock's Second Corps and give it a drubbing. As Longstreet tried to maximize the struggle, he was shot by hos own troops by mistake--almost one year after Stonewall Jackson died after being shot by his troops.Finally, the armies separated. Grant moved south, unlike other Union commanders who had run into Robert E. Lee. And the War in the East continued. . . .

The book is accurate in all matters. It is brief in some aspects of the battle,but all in all, the book is well worth the time one will spend reading it, and seeing some new aspects of the battle. I felt that more space should have been spent on the deaths of brigade commanders and probably how this decided the outcome of the battle.

Chris Mackowski is one of my favorite Civil War Authors. I own every book he has written on the Civil War. He tells a clear, simple, and concise story about each battle. His tour guide is also invaluable. "He'll Itself: The Battle of The Wilderness is an example of what I am talking about.

Having visited the Wilderness Battlefield, I enjoyed the mix of history and driving tour. The story telling of the battle and back stories were excellent.

Available through Amazon.com.The Geneva based watch manufacture of Vacheron Constantin has been continuously making high grade, beautiful watches since 1755 so one would expect horological collectors to be quite knowledgeable about its history and product line. But while most horological enthusiasts have a vague familiarity with the brand, and know it has a high reputation few could cite specific examples. It seems that Vacheron has concentrated on making great timekeepers rather than relentlessly beating the public relations drum.But in the summer of 2011 they showed a small selection of the best watches they produced over the centuries for two months at a gorgeous exhibit at the National Museum of Singapore. For all those of us who missed the show, thankfully the exhibit was documented in a comprehensive and well produced published catalog.On first sight the book may appear as just one more `coffee table picture book' of beautiful watches, but because this was a thoughtfully put together exhibit, in reality its catalog became a thorough and interesting pictorial history of the brand, equally captivating to neophytes and serious students of horological history.The bulk of the book (pages 39 to 211) is the catalog proper, structured like the exhibit into two times four chapters: Four dedicated to functional aspects of timekeepers (Timekeeping, Complications, Specific Needs, Design), and four focusing on specialized watch decorator trades: the Engraver (the artisan of matter), the Guillocheur (the artisan of relief), the Jeweler (the artisan of light), and the Enamaler (the artisan of color). Each chapter has only one page of text, the rest is just images with their short descriptive captions. 158 watches are shown on, typically one, but sometimes two to a page. Mostly there is only one image per watch, but sometimes as many as three or four, but movements are very rarely shown. Images are reproduced at 100 to 200% of the size of the objects. The short image captions provide exact dimensions, caliber information, year of manufacturing and a few words on technical details or artistic details. The experience of browsing the book is very much like visiting a well labeled, well lighted museum exhibition of fine watches.The 37 pages preceding the catalog itself include a few short essays on the firm's history and the history of watchmaking in the city of Geneva.This reviewer would have loved to visit this exhibit in Singapore (and hopes it will be restaged elsewhere later) but feels that owning the book must closely emulate the live experience. The quality of the photography and of the printing is superb. Not sure if this book is right for you? Maybe my review can help. A little background on me so you know where I’m coming from: I’m in my 30s and living in Minneapolis, MN I have lived my whole life on a pretty meat and cheese heavy diet. Growing up we had the usual suspects and nothing fancy: spaghetti, pork chops, tater tot hotdish, etc. As an adult I enjoyed cooking from cookbooks and trying some new things but when planning meals there was almost always a hunk of meat on the menu because that’s just what I was used to.Enter this America’s Test Kitchen cookbook and a new resolve to do better for the planet and my personal health. America’s Test Kitchen material is always top notch in my opinion so I’m a little biased. I decided I wanted to make a commitment to a meat and dairy free life a few weeks ago and this book has really been invaluable in helping make that transition.In terms of the complexity or “weirdness” of ingredients they call for I’d rate them a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10, meaning you’re going to be able to make most of the stuff in here with items you can find at your local grocery store. The weirdest it gets is miso paste (find it on Amazon) and nutritional yeast but that stuff is everywhere nowadays (Bob’s Red Mill sells it in bags or your local co-op will have it in the bulk section).So the book gets points for not using a bunch of weird stuff that’s hard to track down and you’ll use once and then pitch the rest of. Note that if you have a nut allergy you won’t be able to fully take advantage of the recipes here as many of them call for cashew-based sauces and nut milk.Second thing is the quality of the recipes. They’re good, and again, not WEIRD. A lot of vegan cooking approaches of old seemed to focus a lot on creating faux meat substitutes like “facon” or a non-beef ground beef. That is not the focus of this book at all. They have created meat and dairy free recipes that are incredibly tasty and satisfying where you don’t miss the meat and you’re not trying to work around a weird meat substitute on your plate either.They emphasize getting comfortable with and liberally using a variety of beans, grains and vegetables instead of trying to find ways to replicate meat. The book gets major points from me for focusing on enhancing the flavors and textures of the products vegans DO eat rather than trying to imitate the products they DON’T eat. That’s the best way to feel fulfilled on this kind of diet rather than frustrated and they nailed it.The book itself is beautiful. I think there’s a picture for every recipe and in my opinion that’s a MUST for a cookbook, and especially a VEGAN cookbook. When someone like me is trying a new way of eating it really helps to be able to see what the finished product can/will look like for inspiration and motivation. They also have a helpful and brief section at the beginning in typical ATK fashion schooling you on the basics of beans, grains, and nut milks. For a beginner this is a very helpful reference - it is succinct and clear.Lastly, you DO need some equipment to get the best results with this cookbook and with any vegan cooking really. If you’ve been trying to eat vegan but it takes you hours to prepare a meal or the sauce just never turns out quite right you just need to invest in a Cuisinart and a Vitamix. Don’t skimp on that stuff as it will make a WORLD of difference in your ability to cook efficiently and get the right flavors and textures. To fully take advantage of the recipes in this book it also helps to have an ice cream maker.I haven’t been disappointed yet with the results. We’ve made:- Black bean burgers with cumin and pub sauce (actually, we’ve made this twice and the second time we doubled the batch to freeze half of the patties for later)- Red lentil soup- Fettuccine Alfredo (pictured) - it gets its rich and creamy sauce from miso, cauliflower, cashews and almond milk! You won’t mistake it for a parm-based dish but you also won’t miss the parmesan cheese at all. This is flavorful and light but filling, the complete opposite of the heavy cream and cheese based alfredo I used to eat. All 25 feet of my intestines thanked me for hours after eating this meal.- Macaroni and Cheese - similar to the fettuccine, this recipe uses a nut and cauliflower base for its cheese sauce plus some "nooch" (nutritional yeast). It was light and satisfying. It came together in about 20 minutes from ingredients we had on-hand, making it an obvious choice for rotation on the week night meal schedule.- Baja coconut cauliflower tacos (pictured) - this was surprisingly good...the cauliflower florets are dipped in coconut milk then dredged with coconut flakes and panko and roasted. They get incredibly creamy and actually are reminiscent of coconut shrimp but BETTER.- Crispy Orange Seitan (pictured) - The crisp cornmeal/cornstarch crust and sweet orange sauce are the stars here and as such we did not miss the chicken. Bonus: 1 ounce of seitan has 21 grams of protein while 1 ounce of chicken only has 8 grams protein!- Pesto Pizza with Fennel and Cauliflower (pictured) - A proliferation of basil in my garden had me thumbing through the book looking for something to use it in. Enter this pizza. If your hangup about eating vegan is giving up cheese-smothered pizza (hey, we all have our foods we're scared to live without!) then you really must try this recipe and you will be a believer. As with every other vegan meal I've assembled the absence of meat and cheese means other ingredients have room to shine. I did slightly modify this to add a cashew cream "mozzarella" drizzle on top for some additional creaminess. You could also use their cashew ricotta (recipe on p. 27) to add a little extra cheesy flavor to this.- Coconut ice cream - we did this one as instructed first, then did a second batch and added a quarter cup of unsweetened baking cocoa and it was AMAZING (pictured). As a bonafide ice cream junkie (an evening wasn’t complete without a big bowl of rich, creamy dairy ice cream!) I can confidently say I’d eat this the rest of my life and never feel compelled to touch another bowl of “real” ice cream. I had tried a couple of other vegan ice cream recipes from other sources prior to this and I can confidently tell you nothing else I tried came close to the lightness of the texture here. Other ice creams come out flatter in flavor and much denser. While the coconut flavor comes through, I’d say this has a texture comparable to Breyers and that’s difficult to achieve with a non-dairy base.All in all I would highly recommend this book for a prominent place in your collection if you’re a seasoned vegan looking for some quality recipes that you don’t need to “tinker” with and especially if you’re a newbie vegan looking to get a solid and positive start to help you make the transition.

From cover to cover this book is packed with proven, thoroughly tested, diverse recipes.My brother and I decided to enthusiastically cook every dish in this book Julie & Julia style. So far a few standouts are the chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, chickpea salad, creamless creamy tomato soup, pinto bean beet burger, and I could just drink the ginger miso sauce! The brownies were by far the best vegan recipe I have ever made.Kudos to ATK for NOT using crazy, exotic, hard to find ingredients. All the dishes call for straight forward ingredients. I was also impressed not to find one recipe that included vegan "butter".I am looking forward to a long and fulfilling relationship with this cookbook. I feel I could serve any dish in this book to my omnivore friends with confidence.Thank you Americas Test Kitchen for dipping your toe in the vegan cookbook pool, this book lives up to your stellar reputation.

I've made 4 recipes since I received this cookbook a week ago. The results are really extraordinary. The blueberry muffin recipe produced the most delicious muffins I've tasted, vegan or not. I made the fettuccine alfredo last night and the sauce was creamy, smooth and velvety. The "parmesan cheese" recipe yields the best I have tasted. I can't wait to try every recipe. The photographs are beautiful and the recipes are well written. This may become the Gold Standard of vegan cookbooks. Highly recommended!

I'm a fan of ATK. This cookbook rounds out my vegan collection very nicely. I have others that focus on nutrition, saving money and saving time and I've found favorite flavorful recipes in each. But sometimes the vegan foods I've grown to like don't have wide appeal for people not used to eating this way. These recipes aren't that hard, save them for your days off if you're new to cooking, you'll still get your money's worth. Only 3 recipes use meat substitutes (1 uses seitan and 2 use unspecified "vegan crumbles" which can be made with bulgur, brown lentils, mushrooms and walnuts cooked for 25 minutes in a rice cooker). Some reviewers are misleading in that respect. For those who don't want soy, you might skip most of the Dinner recipes, but note that only 4 out of 18 recipes use soy in the Bowls chapter. ATK uses traditional soy foods: tempeh, tofu, miso, soy sauce, not TVP or products using isolated soy protein. There is a mayo recipe that does not use soy. I am pleased that so many recipes use only whole foods. I never expect to use every recipe in any cookbook, but I can easily find a dozen (at least) in this cookbook that I will use over and over again. For instance, I love the easy Vegetable Soup Base that stores in the freezer, the Chiclpea Noodle Soup (which also works in a slow cooker) and the Black Bean Burgers which hold together beautifully. Borrow a copy at the library and I'm pretty sure you'll find a least a few recipes that meet your criteria for good eating!

if you don't have ATK The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook or The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook, you will be thrilled with this Cookbook! The recipes are delicious, but I have to give this one 3 stars because ATK got lazy. I can say the recipes are delicious because I've made them when using the other two books mentioned. Out of the 16 recipes under Stews and Chilis, 11 are from the Vegetarian Cookbook and 3 are from the Mediterranean Cookbook!! Yes, that means there are only 2 Recipes that are new to me. That's way too much redundancy.Sections:Intro - has some great ideas on how to boost flavor in vegan recipes.Soups Stew and Cilis - see comments aboveBurgers Sandwiches and Pizza - the pizzas look amazing.Main Dish Salads and BowlsStir fries Curries and NoodlesSnacks and AppsDessertsNutrition InfoOne thing to note.
