About the Author
Kheir Al-Kodmany (Ph.D. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he teaches urban design and physical planning. Before joining the UIC faculty, Dr. Al-Kodmany worked designing projects for Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Dr. Al-Kodmany s recent research focuses on new approaches to planning and design through the use of powerful computerized visualization, including Geographic Information Systems, 3D modeling, Hypermedia and Virtual Reality. He has played a large role in developing GCUDV s Web-based mapping survey tools for effective participatory planning and design. He has established a strong publication record in the area of urban visualization and public participation, having ranked seventh in the number of publications of all U. S. planning faculty members over the five-year period, 1998-2003, according to a study conducted by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. Mir M. Ali (Ph.D., University of Waterloo) is a Professor Emeritus and former Structures Division Chairman in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he teaches Structures courses. Prior to joining UIUC, he taught a Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and worked as a structural engineer at Sargent & Lundy, Chicago, IL; Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Chicago, IL; Albery, Pullerits, Dickson & Associates, Ontario, Canada; and B. H. Martin Consultants Ltd, Ontario, Canada. He is the author, co-author or editor of five books in his field: Architecture of Tall Buildings (Principal Editor, McGraw-Hill, 1995), Bangladesh Floods: Views From Home and Abroad (Co-editor, University Press Limited, Bangladesh; 1998), Art of the Skyscraper: The Genius of Fazlur Khan (Author, Rizzoli International Publications; 2001), Catalyst for Skyscraper Revolution: Lynn S.
